JUNE 2000

6/38/00  NEW PROJECTS?  I found this through the Hollywood Reporter:  Gaumont, the French production company (Vatel, among other things) has three new projects in the works.  One is Rasputin, a 50 million dollar epic to be directed by celebrated Dutch direct Paul Verhoeven.  The second is Animal, a 15 million dollar Jeckyll and Hyde story set in the world of genetic engineering.  The director is Roland Joffe, director of Vatel.  The third is a Disney remake of Depardieu's 1998 Bimboland.  Although casting hasn't been announced, my guess is that Depardieu will be in at least one of these.  He's expressed a desire to play Rasputin in interviews (wouldn't that be swell!) and when Disney remade My Father the Hero they used Depardieu.  In fact, it would be silly if they didn't use Depardieu.  He certainly has enough of an American following.  But this is all solidly in the rumor mill, folks.

6/7/00  VATEL.  Official release date has been set for Dec 25, 2000.

6/2/00  LES MISÉRABLES  I spoke to a PR person at Fox Family Channel about this project.  The air date is Jan, 2001.  It will air as a 2 part mini-series, in English (there was a longer version shot in French, but that will not be shown in the US).  Fox Family Channel will be doing a website for Les Misérables on their Fox Family Channel site and it should be up in August.  They're still discussing whether or not it will be released on video.

6/1/00  VIDOCQ  I've found a French site about it (Mister W's) and Babblefish interpreted it for me pretty well.  Here's the url.  The site reports that originally there were 2 Vidocq movies planned, one with Depardieu and one with Gérard Lanvin, but they ended up being one project.  The movie is filming now (started May 00).  It looks like it will be a highly anticipated release in France and hopefully will be unique enough (between the digital camera and the historical/mystery aspect) to be imported into the US.  The cast includes Guillaume Canet (the Beach), Moussa Masskri, Ines Sastres, and Andre Dussolier.  The pre-poster on right is from the French Vidocq site mentioned above -- thanks Mister W!
