MARCH 2001

3/30/01 LE PLACARD APPEARING STATESIDE!  This Francis Veber directed, Gerard Depardieu/Daniel Auteuil film, which is about a man who pretends to be gay in order to not get fired from his job, is going to have its US debut at the City of Lights, City of Angels Film Festival in L.A.   The festival runs April 10-14 at the Directors Guild of America.  Thanks to Stacy and Julie for finding this info.

3/30/01 SCANDINAVIA WELCOMES DEPARDIEU
The film I Am Dina is now filming in Norway and will be filming through the Spring.  The Norwegian press has been covering the star's visit avidly and though we can't read a bjorkin-yorkin word these articles say, we admire the pretty pictures.  Here're some links:

3/30/01 NAPOLEAN LOOKING FOR JOSEPHINE According to the Hollywood Reporter, in an article dated Mar 6, 2001, Isabella Rossellini is in talks to star as Josephine in the GMT production of Napolean.  Christian Clavier will play the title role, Depardieu will play minister of police Fouche, and John Malkovich is set to play the influential minister Talleyrand.  Screenwriter Dedier Decoin (Count of Monte Cristo, Balzac) adapted the screenplay from a novel by Max Gallo.  The director will be Canadian Yves Simoneau, who recently helmed TNT's wartime drama Nuremberg.  The budget is $30 million and, like Les Mis, it will be filmed in French and English.

3/30/01 UPDATE ON GERARD'S WINE The online wine source we listed a few months ago no longer lists "Chateau de Tigne", the wine Gerard's winery produces.  However, you can still get the wine from Weimax Wines & Spirits in LA (they ship).  You can ring them at (650) 343-0182 or try their website here.  Another source is wallywine.com.

3/30/01 VIDOCQ MISSES CANNES
According to Hollywood Reporter, Vidocq, Depardieu's film about the life of the 18th century detective of that name, was expected to debut at Cannes but will not be at the festival because it will not be completed in time.

3/30/01 THE BRIDGE NOW OUT ON VIDEO
Yes, the video and DVD did actually ship per schedule and I have my own copy in my hot little hands right now.  The video store down the street has it too.  If you haven't seen it, it is a beautiful little film well worth catching.  Here's a nice Calendar Live review sent in by Vicki.

3/5/01 VATEL
There's a nice new Vatel official site in English which isn't to be missed.  Check out especially the new trailer:   Here's the site.

3/5/01 VIDOCQ TRAILER
Want to see a teaser for the upcoming French film Vidocq, starring Gerard Depardieu?  Of course you do!  This film looks very hot and 'pop' enough to be a quick import -- I hope!  Here's the teaser.

3/5/01 ASTERIX & OBELIX DVD/VHS OUT IN UK   For those of you lucky UK people, the VHS (PAL format) and a nice DVD (Region 2) of Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar is now out in the UK!  Here's your link for purchase:  DVD   VHS

3/5/01 BERENICE ON DVD -- IN FRENCH!!
For those of you who can understand French or just like to stare at Gerard whether you can understand him or not, and also have a DVD player which can handle Region 2 (Europe) DVDs (then again you might just be, oh, actually from France), the TV movie Berenice starring Gerard Depardieu and Carole Bouquet is now out on DVD.  This is a televised version of a play by Racine.  Here's the DVD link.

3/5/01 A COUPLE OF NEW LINKS
Found a new interview online from The Guardian that's worth reading.  Here's a San Francisco Chronicle review of The Bridge and an article about Vatel, both from Julie.

3/5/01 HAVE TEA WITH MISS FLORA
Don't ask, just go check out this clever site.  Yummy!

3/5/01 CONCORRENZA SLEALE
Just opened in Italy a few days ago.  This Italian film is set during WWII in Italy and is about a sometimes amusing rivalry between a Catholic and Jewish merchant who own clothing stores next door to each other.   But when the war hits and anti-Semitism rears its head, forcing the Jewish shopkeeper and his family into a whole new world of restrictions and injustices, the Catholic shopkeeper and his family have a change of heart.  Gerard has a role as the brother of the Catholic shopkeeper.  It looks like a very beautiful film and I hope it will be imported someday.  Gerard's been doing a lot of Italian films in the past few years and most of them never make it out of Italy.  Here's the official site about Concorrenza Sleale including a trailer with GD in it.  Thanks to Livia for this great link.
