JANUARY 2001

1/30/01  "GÉGÉ" BECOMES "GRAMPS"   Gerard is now a proud grandfather of a little girl born to Guillaume Depardieu and his wife Elise.  Look for an upcoming article in our press pages.

1/30/01  VATEL TO OPEN SOON NATIONWIDE (US)
Vatel has been on limited release (NY, LA) but is scheduled to open more widely on Feb. 9th.  Don't miss it!

1/4/01  ORDER GERARD'S OWN WINE!!!
Finally, the excellent folks on our message board (see chat) have located a source to purchase Gerard's Chateau de Tigne wine.  Yes, he grows and bottles this stuff on his own vineyards in the Loire valley.  For more about Gerard's life as a wine-maker, see our press article from Hello! magazine.  To order this wonderful wine, go to www.wine-searcher.com and enter "chateau de tigne" in the search box.  You'll find Wally's Wine & Spirits with the contact info, including phone number and email so you can place your order.  And it's only around $12.99 a bottle!  Thanks Julie!

1/4/01  "I AM DINA"
This from OSLO (Variety) - "Gerard Depardieu is in talks to play the main lead in Scandinavia's most expensive feature film project so far. The picture is Danish director Ole Bornedal's $11 million I am Dina, from Norwegian author Herbjorg Wassmo's Dina's Book (1989), which will shoot between May and June.   I am Dina will star Maria Bonnevie as a woman whose life has been marked by an event during her childhood when she inadvertently caused the death of her mother. Pernilla August will play her mother."  Later, Cophenhagen's Variety announced that the talks had been concluded and Gerard would indeed be in the film!!  Thanks to Julie for finding these news items.

I then received this further news on the project from Ralf -- thanks for sending it in, Ralf!
"Depardieu Becomes Scandinavian.  Gérard Depardieu has signed up to join the cast for one of the most expensive movies ever made in Scandinavia.
I Am Dina is based on Herbjorg Wassmo's best-selling novel, about a young girl left traumatized after causing her mother's death. The girl eventually grows into a sensual young woman who lives by her own rules. The story is set in 1840s Norway.  Ole (Nightwatch) Bornedal is directing the English-language gothic romance, with Depardieu set to play Dina's husband. He joins a cast that already includes Maria Bonnevie (The 13th Warrior), Pernilla August (The Best Intentions), Hans Matheson (Les Miserables) and Mads Mikkelson (Bleeder).  Shooting is set to begin in March on the northern coast of Norway."  Since they're shooting in English we will perhaps see this film arrive in the US soon without too much delay.

1/4/01  VATEL Will be in general release soon.  I know it's coming to Seattle any day now -- I saw the poster at the local theater.  KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!  In the meantime, here's a link to a New York Times review of it.  It's not a great review overall but they liked GD's performance.  Thanks to Vicki for the link.

1/4/01  LE PLACARD and VIDOCQ Stacy found this article on the French Yahoo site about upcoming French films in 2001.  Here's Stacy's translations/comments:  "Placard is a cupboard or closet in its historical sense -- think "coming out of the closet." Veber is the director. Rough indirect translation: In this new comedy of manners and morals, an upper level company man [Auteil] poses as a homosexual to avoid getting laid off. By the same director as La Chevre, etc…"    And about Vidocq… "Directing debut of Pitof, who specializes in special effects. Remake of a popular television series. [The TV series was not the first dramatization of the life of Eugene Vidocq, 1775-1857, a convict who became father of modern crime solving. Both Hugo and Balzac drew upon his life for their characters.]"

1/4/01  LE PLACARD site LE PLACARD now has an offiical website here.  The site is in French, but you can download goodies such as a trailer, a nice large pic with Gerard and a very cool animated screensaver.  To get the picture, go to the site and click on 'goodies', then on the drop down menu at the top of the page, select 'numero 2' in the resolution you want for your computer screen and it will download it.  This is a beautiful pic of GD (hard to believe this was right after his surgery).  To get the screensaver, click on the black and blue picture below that under the heading "telechargez votre economisateur d'ecran".  It will download a zip file.  If you double click on the zip file it will install the screensaver on your computer.  To see it, RIGHT CLICK on your monitor background and select PROPERTIES to get your monitor settings.  Click on the SCREENSAVER tab and select PREVIEW.  Cool, mais non?  To see the trailer look under 'le film' and select 'bande-annonce'.  This film looks very funny -- let's hope it crosses the Atlantic soon!  It hits theaters in France Jan 17, 2001.
